April isn’t just about spring showers and blooming flowers; it’s also Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a crucial period dedicated to raising awareness about the perils of using cell phones while behind the wheel.

In 2022 alone, distracted driving claimed the lives of over 3,300 individuals nationwide, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Gilbert Police Department is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of our roadways.

To encourage safe driving habits, they offer these simple yet effective tips:

– Park Safely: If you need to send a text, pull over to a safe location and park your car.

– Designated Texter: Assign a passenger as your “designated texter” to handle calls or messages.

– Avoid App Use: Refrain from scrolling through apps while driving. If the temptation is strong, consider stowing your cell phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat until you reach your destination.

By following these guidelines, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure that they, along with others on the road, arrive safely to their destinations.

The Gilbert Police Department extends its gratitude to all residents for their efforts in maintaining road safety. Let’s work together to keep our roadways safe for everyone.
