The Albertsons store at Ellsworth and Baseline and the Safeway at Signal Butte and Warner/Point Twenty-Two will not become Fry’s Stores in the upcoming merger, and will be divested from the Kroger company. The Albertsons store at Power and Broadway will also be divested.
In a strategic move to address antitrust concerns, Kroger has announced its proposal to divest 101 Albertsons and Safeway locations in Arizona as part of its ongoing merger negotiations with Albertsons. This decision comes as part of a larger plan to offload a total of 569 stores across 18 states, contingent upon the successful completion of the $24 billion merger.
The stores are slated to be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers, a measure intended to alleviate regulatory apprehensions regarding market competition. The merger has been under scrutiny by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which has raised concerns about potential monopolistic outcomes in the grocery sector.
Despite these measures, it remains uncertain whether the FTC will approve the merger even with the proposed divestitures. Both Kroger and Albertsons continue to face significant regulatory challenges as they navigate through the complexities of the merger process. The Albertsons located at Power and Broadway will not be converted into a Fry’s store.
The divestiture plan is a critical step for Kroger and Albertsons as they work to finalize their merger and expand their presence in the competitive grocery market. The outcome of the FTC’s decision will be pivotal in determining the future landscape of grocery retail in the United States.
