MESA — Following an evaluation by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the speed limit on State Route 24 in the southeast Valley has been increased.

State Route 24, extending 5 miles from Ellsworth Road to Ironwood Drive, opened in 2022 as a divided interim roadway. The speed limit on this four-lane highway has now been raised from 45 mph to 55 mph, as determined by a recent speed study conducted by ADOT. The updated speed limit signs were installed on Thursday night.

ADOT emphasized that a key purpose of speed limits is to improve safety by ensuring motorists maintain consistent speeds. More information about the safety benefits of uniform speed limits can be found in studies by the Federal Highway Administration.

Looking ahead, a project is planned to expand SR 24 into a six-lane, access-controlled urban freeway starting in 2027. This development will be partially funded by Proposition 479, a half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2024.

For ongoing updates on Arizona road projects, visit ADOT’s official website.
