In the middle of the playground at Boulder Creek Elementary School lies a serene sanctuary that offers more than just a place to play. The school’s Healing Garden, a vibrant oasis of greenery and tranquility, has become an integral part of the school community, providing students with a nurturing environment to learn, grow, and heal.
Initiated in 2020, the Healing Garden serves as both an outdoor classroom and a sanctuary for students facing emotional challenges. Social worker Ashley Fortune, one of the driving forces behind the garden’s inception, explains its significance: “It’s a place of healing. It’s a place for kids to come when they’re having a hard time. Sunshine, beautiful plants, and the earthy scents help them refocus their minds and find peace amidst the chaos.”
The garden, lovingly tended by the students themselves, offers a hands-on learning experience. From planting seeds to harvesting vegetables, students learn valuable lessons about nature, science, and responsibility. “They get to learn how things are grown,” says Fortune. “They get to take care of the seeds and the plants as they grow. It’s not just about academics; it’s about nurturing their souls.”
Principal Jim Leeper emphasizes the garden’s role in students’ development and mental health: “The garden provides a calm space where students can unwind and connect with nature. Many students find solace here during recess, watching the plants grow or simply chatting with friends.”
Reflecting on the school’s culture of learning, Principal Leeper expresses pride in the teachers’ dedication to fostering meaningful relationships with students. “Teachers’ rapport with students is impressive,” says Leeper. “It motivates children to learn and give their best effort.”
As the spring approaches, Boulder Creek Elementary School gears up for its annual Garden Day on April 20th, coinciding with Earth Day. The entire community is invited to join in the gardening activities from 8am-10am, nurturing the garden’s growth and fostering a sense of community spirit.
The school welcomes assistance from master gardeners or gardening enthusiasts willing to lend their expertise. Additionally, donations of materials such as gravel and artificial turf are welcome to enhance the garden’s comfort and aesthetics.
