$28 million project marks significant milestone for regional air travel hub

February 21, 2024 Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport celebrated a major milestone today with the grand opening of its new five-gate terminal concourse, signaling a significant upgrade for the regional air travel hub. Joined by a diverse array of community leaders, business representatives, and government officials, the event marked the culmination of a $28 million project aimed at meeting the growing demand for air travel in the Greater Phoenix area.

Replacing a four-gate, 10,000 sq. ft. portable building installed in 2008, the new 30,000 sq. ft. addition represents a substantial expansion of Gateway Airport’s infrastructure. Funding for the project was secured through a combination of sources, including grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the FAA Airport Improvement Program, contributions from the State of Arizona, and support from the six Airport Member Communities.

Apache Junction Mayor Chip Wilson, who also serves as the Board Chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority (PMGAA), expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its significance for travelers. “With nearly two million passengers choosing Gateway Airport each year, this new terminal expansion demonstrates PMGAA’s commitment to enhancing the Just Plane Easy travel experience,” Apache Junction Mayor Wilson remarked.

The expansion comes in response to record-breaking passenger activity at the airport, with 2023 marking the busiest year in its history, welcoming over 1.9 million travelers. Mesa Mayor John Giles underscored the economic impact of Gateway Airport on the region, noting its contribution of over $1.8 billion annually to the Greater Phoenix economy. “Expanding capacity at the Airport unlocks new opportunities for both visitors and local air travelers,” Mayor Giles emphasized.

With a total of 11 gates now available, Gateway Airport is well-positioned to sustain its growth trajectory. Allegiant, one of the primary carriers at the airport, has announced plans to increase its summer flight schedule by an impressive 19%, offering nonstop service to 45 popular destinations. Meanwhile, Sun Country Airlines continues to enjoy success with its seasonal nonstop service to Minneapolis.

J. Brian O’Neill, A.A.E., Executive Director, and CEO of PMGAA, hailed the new South Concourse as a timely addition to accommodate the influx of spring travelers to Arizona. “The facility positions Gateway Airport for continued growth in the future,” O’Neill remarked.
