A potentially tragic situation was averted on August 15th when an alert Mesa police sergeant intervened to stop an elderly driver experiencing a medical emergency on Ellsworth Road. At 6:22 p.m., a concerned citizen called 911 to report a silver Blazer traveling southbound on Ellsworth Road, erratically running red lights, hitting poles, and damaging medians as it approached Warner Road.

The caller, clearly alarmed, described the driver’s behavior, stating, “She’s gonna hit someone, or she’s gonna hit a pole… Elderly lady. She is not right.”  Sergeant Adair, who responded to the call, spotted the vehicle just as it came to a stop in the middle of an intersection.  However, before the situation could be assessed, the vehicle started moving again, this time veering into oncoming traffic.

Recognizing the urgency, Sergeant Adair quickly decided to disable the vehicle. He approached, broke the window to access the driver, and immediately realized that the woman was suffering from a medical issue. ”

It was later determined that the elderly driver had suffered a stroke. Thanks to Sergeant Adair’s quick thinking and decisive action, she was safely taken to the hospital for treatment. This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and the swift response of local law enforcement in preventing what could have been a devastating accident.

The Mesa Police Department commends the concerned citizen who made the 911 call and Sergeant Adair for his life-saving actions.
