Mesa Gateway Airport Prepares Major Upgrades as Passenger Traffic Reaches New Heights

Mesa Gateway Airport is preparing for a series of improvements designed to keep pace with continued growth and improve the experience for travelers.

After surpassing 2 million passengers during fiscal year 2026, the East Mesa airport is moving ahead with projects involving dining, parking, baggage screening and airfield infrastructure. The airport reported a record 2,007,655 passengers between July 1, 2025, and June 30, 2026, highlighting the continued growth of air travel in the Phoenix East Valley.

The improvements come as Mesa Gateway’s flight options continue to expand, including additional service announced for the upcoming winter travel season.

From new food options inside the terminal to expanded covered parking and a higher-capacity baggage screening system, here’s a look at what Mesa Gateway travelers can expect in the coming months and years.

More Dining Choices Are Planned for the Terminal

Travelers could soon have several additional options for grabbing food, coffee and snacks before or after a flight.

The airport has plans for new locations from Dunkin’ and Cold Beer & Cheeseburgers, along with a future Wetzel’s Pretzels operation.

According to the original Arizona Republic report, Dunkin’ is expected near Gate 4 and was anticipated to open around the Thanksgiving travel period, while Cold Beer & Cheeseburgers is planned near Gate 5 with an expected opening before the end of 2026. Wetzel’s Pretzels is expected to include a kiosk near baggage claim as well as a mobile cart serving the concourses, with an anticipated opening in early 2027.

The additions would expand on the airport’s current lineup of dining and retail options. Mesa Gateway’s existing concessions include Macayo’s Mexican Food, O.H.S.O. Brewery, Panera Bread, coffee shops and several grab-and-go and retail locations throughout the terminal and baggage claim area.

The airport’s growing passenger base is helping drive demand for additional services. Mesa Gateway currently operates one passenger terminal with 11 gates, serving commercial travelers alongside its substantial general aviation activity.

Another 200 Covered Parking Spaces Are on the Way

Anyone who has returned to their car after leaving it outside during an Arizona summer may appreciate another planned improvement: more covered parking.

Airport officials plan to add 200 covered spaces at the Ray Road Economy Parking Lot. Construction was scheduled to begin in September, according to the original report.

The airport already offers premium covered parking within its Economy Lot, along with Daily, Hourly and standard Economy parking options. The Economy Lot also provides free shuttle transportation to and from the terminal.

Mesa Gateway’s parking system has grown into an increasingly important part of airport operations. The airport set a new record for vehicle parking revenue during fiscal year 2026, generating more than $5.86 million, according to its August 2026 year-end report.

The additional covered spaces are intended to help meet demand as more travelers use the airport, while also giving passengers more opportunities to keep their vehicles out of the direct sun.

Runway Reconstruction Is Entering Its Final Phase

Major work is also continuing away from the passenger terminal.

Mesa Gateway’s 10,400-foot inside runway, which is the runway closest to the terminal, has been undergoing a multi-phase reconstruction project with a total cost of approximately $45 million.

The project was divided into phases to allow portions of the runway to remain available for general aviation activity during construction. Work on the southern half was completed in 2025, while reconstruction of the northern half is expected to wrap up by the end of 2026, according to the Arizona Republic report.

The airport’s importance extends beyond commercial passenger flights. In calendar year 2025, Mesa Gateway recorded more than 304,000 total flight operations, with general aviation accounting for the majority of activity.

Completing the runway project will help support the airport’s continued mix of commercial, private, business and other aviation operations.

Taxiway Golf Is Being Rebuilt With a New Alignment

Another major airfield project involves the realignment of Taxiway Golf.

The approximately $16.5 million project will replace older concrete while creating a new configuration intended to improve aircraft movement and reduce the potential for runway conflicts and incursions.

The first phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, while the full project is anticipated to continue into 2027, according to the original report.

Once finished, the realigned Taxiway Golf is expected to connect with all three of Mesa Gateway’s runways. While travelers may not see much of the work from inside the terminal, projects like runway and taxiway improvements play an important role in maintaining airport infrastructure as aviation activity grows.

A Bigger, Faster Baggage Screening Facility Is Expected in 2027

Mesa Gateway is also working on a significant upgrade to its checked baggage screening system.

The new 13,000-square-foot explosive detection facility is expected to house two Leidos eXaminer 3DX-ES screening machines using 3D X-ray technology. The building will also have space available for a third machine if additional capacity is needed in the future.

When operational, the system is expected to process more than 1,500 checked bags per hour. That represents a substantial increase from the airport’s older equipment, which can process up to about 400 bags per hour, according to the Arizona Republic report.

The new facility is expected to be completed around August or September 2027.

The investment comes as the airport continues handling record passenger numbers. Fiscal year 2026 not only set a passenger activity record but also produced records for operating revenue, net income and aviation fuel sales.

For passengers, the expanded screening capacity is intended to provide infrastructure that can accommodate future growth as the airport handles more travelers and checked luggage.

Two More Hotels Are Taking Shape Near the Airport

The area surrounding Mesa Gateway is also seeing new development aimed at supporting visitors, business travelers and airline passengers.

A five-story, 125-room SpringHill Suites by Marriott is under development at Gateway East, a major business park near the airport. Mesa Gateway Airport Authority documents previously identified the project as part of plans for Gateway East, with additional retail and restaurant development also planned for the area.

The Arizona Republic reports that the hotel is now expected to open in summer 2027.

Another hotel is planned at SkyBridge Arizona on South Sossaman Road. The project is expected to include 129 rooms with accommodations designed for both extended-stay guests and shorter visits. Its opening is currently anticipated in fall 2027, according to the original report.

The development of hotels near Mesa Gateway has been anticipated as the surrounding area continues to grow. City of Mesa economic development materials have previously identified hotel development at both Gateway East and SkyBridge as part of the expanding Mesa Gateway area.

East Mesa’s Hotel Growth Is Already Underway

The two airport-area hotels will add to a broader wave of lodging development in East Mesa.

The Arizona Republic also reported that Arizona’s first StudioRes by Marriott opened at Gateway Plaza on Power Road in July 2026. Meanwhile, a dual-branded Tempo/Homewood Suites by Hilton project is preparing to welcome guests later this year.

Together, the projects could give travelers more lodging choices close to Mesa Gateway and the growing collection of businesses, entertainment destinations and sports facilities surrounding the airport.

Gateway East alone encompasses hundreds of acres planned for business and commercial development, while the larger Mesa Gateway area continues attracting aviation, manufacturing, logistics, hospitality and other investment.

What the Upgrades Mean for Mesa Gateway Travelers

Mesa Gateway Airport’s latest projects are largely a response to one simple fact: more people are using the airport.
