Garmin is significantly boosting its aviation presence in Arizona with the acquisition of a new aviation facility at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. This move reflects the company’s commitment to expanding its aircraft certification and flight testing operations, strengthening both its aviation business and the local aerospace ecosystem.
Strategic Expansion with New Facility

Garmin announced it has purchased a hangar and office complex totaling approximately 75,000 square feet at Mesa Gateway Airport. The facility, composed of two adjacent hangars with supporting office space, will significantly increase the company’s capacity for aircraft certification and flight test functions — essential components of bringing aviation products to market.
The expanded facility is expected to support about 75 employees and will join Garmin’s existing flight operations centers in New Century, Kansas, and Salem, Oregon. Garmin’s aviation division develops a broad range of technologies for general aviation, business aircraft, rotorcraft, and commercial applications, making this facility a key part of its long-term infrastructure.
Why Mesa Was Chosen
The Mesa Gateway location offers several advantages that make it ideal for aviation operations. The airport boasts three parallel runways, with two exceeding 10,000 feet in length, providing flexibility for flight testing across various aircraft types. Additionally, the region’s generally clear weather throughout the year supports consistent flight operations and reduces weather-related delays that can affect testing schedules.
Local airport leadership welcomed Garmin’s expansion, noting the region’s established reputation for aerospace innovation and strong infrastructure. Mesa Gateway has become a hub for aviation activity, with customer support and service centers for major aircraft manufacturers already located at the airport.
Building on Arizona Roots
Garmin has deep roots in the Phoenix area. The company’s presence in Arizona began over 25 years ago with a facility in Tempe and later expanded to Chandler. In 2019, Garmin further strengthened its local footprint by acquiring AeroData, a Scottsdale-based provider of flight performance software. This long-standing regional presence helps Garmin attract experienced engineers and aviation specialists to support its growing operations in Mesa.
The company’s investment in Mesa not only expands facilities but also positions Garmin to hire engineers and support teams focused on aircraft certification, airworthiness approvals, and flight testing — key functions in modern aviation development.
Broader Industry Impact
This investment comes at a time when Arizona’s aerospace sector is experiencing growth, with companies increasingly choosing the state for testing, manufacturing, and support operations. Garmin’s expansion complements other developments at the airport and contributes to the region’s role as a destination for advanced aviation technology and innovation.
