Arizona State University and the city of Mesa will break ground Friday at the planned ASU @ Mesa City Center development. The university will house its Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at the downtown Mesa center. That will house 3-D technology, design, virtual and augmented reality programs.

Mesa Mayor John Giles and ASU President Michael Crow will be the groundbreaking of the downtown center.

Mesa officials hope the ASU footprint will encourage more activity and other developments in the East Valley city’s downtown.

The building will be 117,795 square feet at Pepper Street and Centennial Way. The project total $73.5 million (including $10 million from the city of Mesa). The building is scheduled to be open in 2022 and with its programs home to 750 students.
