The wonderful community in southeast Mesa came out in force on Saturday, May 16, to donate bikes to Arizona Association for Foster and Adoptive Parents at The VUE restaurant.

The idea was simple. Many children in foster care have never had their own bike, and so many people have bikes that have either been outgrown or underutilized. Some bikes are in need of repair, and the volunteers at AZAFAP are eager to restore and repair bikes so that foster kids can have one of their own, not only for fun, but to get to school or work.

Word got out about the bicycle drive through word of mouth, articles at 85209.com and 85212.com and in the Your Community Connection newsletter as well as at The VUE restaurant and The Kenny Klaus Team with Keller Williams. As a result, 75 bicycles were donated to AZAFAP.

“It’s a breath of fresh air that the bikes we received were in such great condition,” said Gary Jones of AZAFAP. The event coordinators were surprised by the number of “A” bikes that were donated, that would require little or no work at all to rehabilitate and present to a foster child.

“Thanks to the community for your support,” said Deb Tewksbury, event coordinator.
