The City of Mesa and Mesa Public Schools is looking for up to 60 professional mentors and staff with technical expertise to help with Hactivate Mesa.
Hactivate Mesa is a two-day experience for 90 local, area high school students to learn how to apply data to community issues. Students will learn to discover, study, analyze and present data about an issue in their community. Students will form up to 18 teams and present the challenges together as a group. Teams will be judged on presentations and the winners will receive exciting prizes.
Volunteers will assist participants by providing technical expertise, answering questions, as well as giving guidance and advice. Mentors are needed with the following background skills:
- Data analysis using Excel
- Data visualization and presentation best practices
- Critical thinking, uncovering connections and patterns
- Familiarity with csv, kml and map datasets
This is a great opportunity to be more involved in your community and help students learn data science, STEM, critical thinking, problem solving, presentation skills, community pride, and much more.
Hactivate Mesa is January 18-19, 2019 from 9am-4pm at the Mesa Convention Center, Building A Superstition Ballroom. Lunch and snacks are provided both days.
Interested mentors can register at mesaaz.gov/hacktivate. A briefing session for all mentors will be held prior to Hacktivate Mesa.
