EPA ‘Fix a Leak Week’ Encourages Water Efficiency

As part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Fix a Leak Week, the City of Mesa is asking its customers to check fixtures around the house for leaks that can waste hundreds of gallons of water per month.

Fix a Leak Week, March 14-20, 2022, is meant to encourage residents to save water by repairing common leaks found inside and outside the home including leaking toilet flappers, dripping faucets and showerheads, irrigation systems, and other leaking valves. Water leaks can waste as much as 10,000 gallons of water each year in your home – enough to fill a backyard swimming pool. Businesses can do their part, as well, by checking for and repairing leaks in kitchens and bathrooms and in the landscape.

With the adoption of the Mesa Climate Action Plan in 2021, Mesa has reaffirmed its commitment to reduce overall water use in all city operations, by fixing leaks and improving processes. One example is the City’s use of Waterfluence, a landscape water management system that uses technology to ensure optimal water use at Mesa parks. Additionally, a centralized irrigation control system constantly checks for irregularities in the system and can shut down affected areas within minutes if a leak is detected.

“Fixing leaks is easy to do, doesn’t cost a lot, and can save homeowners and businesses as much as ten percent or more on their water bills,” said City of Mesa Conservation Coordinator Becky Zusy. “And, because of our desert conditions and ongoing drought, fixing leaks can help conserve our precious water supply, which is always important.”

It’s easy to check for leaks in your home. To help, the City is offering free resources to assist residents, including a free toilet leak detection kit and an easy step-by-step booklet called Find & Fix Leaks That Are Draining Your Budget. Customers can pick up both items at one of the following locations, while supplies last, or request a copy by calling (480) 644-3306:

  • Mesa Main Library, 64 E. 1st St.
  • Red Mountain Branch Library, 635 N. Power Road
  • Municipal Building, 55 N. Center St.
